(Hollywood, CA) Can you combine the calming flow of a yoga class with the heart-pounding suspense of a horror story? As it turns out, you absolutely can.
Enter Hot Yoga, a wildly inventive dark comedy written and performed by Ruby Marker and directed by Daisy Tichenor. Presented as a live, interactive, and very real 50-minute yoga class, Hot Yoga is easily one of the most unique theatrical experiences we’ve encountered this year.
We were thrilled to attend a performance of Hot Yoga as part of this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival. A huge thank you to Ruby Marker and Daisy Tichenor for inviting us out!
More About Hot Yoga
Ruby Marker stars as Marie, a yoga instructor from a small, crunchy Colorado town whose ambitions stretch far beyond the walls of her studio. But when those dreams are threatened, Marie’s seemingly peaceful wellness class begins to unravel in increasingly disturbing ways, transforming from a relaxing yoga session into something much darker… and far bloodier.
What makes Hot Yoga so special is its immersive format. Audience members can choose to simply watch the show from traditional seating, but the truly adventurous have the option to participate in the yoga class itself. Because the yoga is completely real, participants find themselves fully immersed in Marie’s world – stretching, balancing, and breathing their way through the unfolding chaos. The result is an intimate and surprisingly tense horror experience unlike anything we’ve seen on stage before.
The show’s clever concept would be enough to make it memorable, but Hot Yoga doesn’t stop there. Marker also delivers some impressively gruesome practical effects that elevate the production’s horror credentials even further. Without giving anything away, there’s one particularly shocking sequence that horror fans are going to absolutely love. As someone who lives for spooky season, I was delighted.
