(Hollywood, CA) Now playing at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, Women Who Eat is a wildly vivd horror production that blends feminism, personal liberation, and cultural commentary with some of the most visceral stage gore you’ll find anywhere. Following the bloody descent of six women stranded in an eating disorder recovery center, this unforgettable production delivers equal parts thought-provoking drama and full-throttle horror. For genre fans, it’s an absolute must-see.
We were thrilled to attend a performance of Women Who Eat at this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival. A huge thank you to Point Blank Productions for inviting us out!
What Is Women Who Eat?
The premise is delightfully unhinged. When a catastrophic storm knocks out power to a remote island recovery center, the six women living there suddenly find themselves completely cut off from the outside world. With no staff, no rules, and no clear way to escape, tensions quickly begin to boil over. The result is a tense, unpredictable descent into chaos that keeps audiences locked in from start to finish.
The Gore. Oh, The Gore.
Nothing could have prepared me for the practical effects in Women Who Eat.
And I don’t mean a little stage blood here and there. I mean genuinely shocking, stomach-churning, cover-your-eyes-and-peek-through-your-fingers horror. The production features some of the most impressive practical gore effects I’ve seen on a stage of this size, creating moments that are as horrifying as they are technically impressive.
There were scenes that were legitimately difficult to watch, and I say that as someone who spends plenty of time covering haunted attractions and horror productions. The effects team deserves enormous credit for crafting visuals that are not only gruesome, but memorable. Several moments drew audible gasps from the audience and for good reason.
Freaky Thoughts: Women Who Eat
At 90 minutes, Women Who Eat takes a little more time to build than the average Fringe production. The pacing occasionally slows as it develops its characters and themes, but the payoff is well worth the investment. Between its bold storytelling, strong performances, and jaw-dropping practical effects, this is an incredible horror offering at this year’s festival.
If you’re a fan of horror, dark comedy, or boundary-pushing Fringe theatre, don’t miss it.
