(Orlando, FL) The curtain may have closed on the 35th Annual Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, but Central Florida is still glowing from the unforgettable performances, fearless creativity, and electric atmosphere that make Fringe such a special experience. While it would be impossible to capture every incredible production in a single article, our post-festival coverage continues with a spotlight series celebrating some of the festival’s unique and memorable shows. This time, we’re chasing The Pursuit of H-Word by Bobby Wesley.
We were so thrilled to attend a performance of this show during the Orlando Fringe Festival. Thank you, Bobby and Orlando Fringe, for having us out!
The Pursuit of H-Word
Written and performed by Orlando’s own Bobby Wesley, The Pursuit of H-Word presents itself as a satirical self-help seminar promising to lead audiences toward happiness in five easy steps. What unfolds is a wildly entertaining mix of storytelling, multimedia gags, juggling, sharp comedy, and heartfelt honesty – all wrapped inside a format that feels hilariously familiar.
Anyone who has ever endured a real self-help seminar (or any kind of lecture, really) will recognize the precision of Bobby’s parody almost immediately. Every beat lands: the polished structure, the overly sincere delivery, and the exaggerated promises of transformation. Bobby commits fully to the bit, complete with fake ad breaks that hilariously skewer everything from AI culture to the aggressively earnest world of hydration. The satire works so well because it’s rooted in something painfully recognizable.
But through all the satire and jokes, Bobby also offers genuinely practical, well-grounded advice. The five steps he outlines are proven ways to improve your own happiness. Woven throughout the presentation are deeply personal stories, including an unexpectedly inspiring account of learning to juggle and bracingly honest reflections on failed relationships and struggles with addiction. These moments give the presentation an unexpected emotional weight.
The show also succeeds because it acknowledges how difficult modern life can feel. Bobby doesn’t pretend happiness is simple or easy to attain. He recognizes the noise, stress, loneliness, and disconnection so many people are carrying right now. Yet instead of leaving the audience in that heaviness, he offers something else: encouragement. Not empty positivity, but practical reminders that pursuing happiness – whatever that means for you personally – is still worthwhile.
That balance between satire and sincerity is incredibly difficult to pull off, and The Pursuit of H-Word manages it beautifully.
Freaky Thoughts: The Pursuit of H-Word
As one of the co-hosts of Orlando Story Club, Bobby Wesley showcases his strengths in The Pursuit of H-Word. The show is funny, vulnerable, clever, and unexpectedly useful. It delivers sharp laughs while still leaving room for reflection, and that combination makes it stand out even in a festival packed with memorable productions.
We could all use a reminder that happiness is something worth actively pursuing, and this satirical self-help seminar actually delivers one.
While the Orlando Fringe Festival has wrapped (and with it, this run of The Pursuit of H-Word) it’s absolutely worth keeping an eye on Bobby Wesley’s Instagram for future performances. If this show comes back around, don’t miss it.
