(Orlando, FL) The 35th Annual Orlando International Fringe Festival is officially underway, bringing two unforgettable weeks of bold, unjuried, and uncensored performance art to Central Florida. While it’s impossible to capture the full scope of Fringe in a single article, we’ve been highlighting some of the festival’s most impactful productions along the way.
For this installment, we’re stepping beyond the main Fringe campus once again and heading to the Renaissance Theatre Company for Then, Eve – a powerful queer reimagining of the Creation story that left a lasting impression long after the lights came up.
A huge thank you to Orlando Fringe for having us out!
What is Then, Eve?
Then, Eve is a one-woman theatrical experience that reframes the story of Creation through a deeply personal queer lens. At its core, the show explores identity, transformation, and what it means to claim authorship over your own story in a world determined to define you first.
Written and performed by Billie Jane, the production balances humor, vulnerability, and emotional honesty with remarkable precision. The result is a show that feels intimate, fearless, and profoundly human.

About Billie Jane
As both the playwright and sole performer behind Then, Eve, Billie Jane brings extraordinary passion and purpose to the stage. Her commitment to amplifying trans voices in theater is woven into every aspect of the production, from its sharp emotional beats to its moments of quiet reflection.
This is not a show interested in offering a sanitized or “safe” version of a complicated experience. It is thoughtful, courageous, and unapologetically alive.
Following its Orlando Fringe run, Then, Eve will continue its international festival journey with upcoming performances in Sydney, Australia and London, England.
Then, Eve
Then, Eve is emotionally layered and deeply affecting. Through Eve’s journey, the production confronts loneliness, identity, and the aching desire for acceptance with both grace and unflinching honesty.
What resonated most with me were the moments centered on erasure – scenes where Eve stands fully in her truth, only to have the world around her refuse to see her for who she really is. Those moments are heartbreaking in a way that transcends identity or lived experience. You don’t have to share Eve’s journey to feel the weight of her isolation.
That’s what makes Then, Eve so impactful. Beneath its queer retelling of Creation is a universally human story about transformation, reclamation, and the courage it takes to live authentically.
If you haven’t experienced Then, Eve yet, make it a priority before Fringe wraps up.
