(Orlando, FL) The 35th Annual Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival is in full swing, and we are back with another installment in our ongoing Fringe series. This time, we are stepping outside (literally) for something truly important and unique. Thank you, Orlando Fringe, for inviting us to attend a performance of The Cage.
What is Orlando Fringe?
The Cage is playing as part of Orlando Fringe, a two-week theater festival focused on unjuried and uncensored works of performance art. The longest-running Fringe festival in the United States, Orlando Fringe is known for featuring bold, alternative, and experimental works. You never know what you are going to find. About The Cage
The Cage is a site-specific outdoor immersive theater experience inspired by firsthand accounts from ICE detainees. The production confronts audiences with the harsh realities of detention and asks a chilling question: How do you prove who you are when no one is willing to believe you?
The script draws directly from interviews with five detainees, as well as conversations with Florida State Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith and Representative Anna Eskamani. This is not fiction designed to feel timely. It is a performance rooted in real experiences, real policies, and real fear.
Each performance welcomes a limited audience into the world of The Cage as agents carry out their so-called “civic duty.” A guest performer is taken from the crowd, and from there, the audience becomes witness to a system where empathy disappears, authority goes unquestioned, and patriotism is weaponized through ritual and language.

What to Expect During The Cage
Running approximately 30 minutes, The Cage wastes no time and pulls no punches. Because the production takes place entirely outdoors, there is no air-conditioned theater to escape into. Audience members should dress for the Florida heat, wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared to remain standing throughout the experience.
That physical discomfort feels intentional. Standing in the heat, unable to intervene as events unfold in front of you, becomes part of the emotional weight of the show itself. The environment is not simply a backdrop; it actively contributes to the tension and unease that make The Cage so effective.
This is an intense production featuring verbal abuse, mild violence, and politically charged subject matter. Perhaps most unsettling of all is the realization that the themes explored in the performance extend far beyond the Festival Lawn.
