(Orlando, FL) The 35th Annual Orlando International Fringe Festival is finally here! From now until Memorial Day, Loch Haven Park (as well as other areas of Orlando) will come alive with a variety of ticketed performances, a free outdoor stage, an eclectic visual art gallery, kids’ activities, and plenty more. While there’s simply too much Fringe to cover in a single article, we are rolling out a series of posts about this incredible event. In this installment, we’re getting Far Too Heavy with Melanie Bailey!
About Melanie
A five-time Fringe award winner, Melanie Bailey has built a reputation for creating deeply compelling and emotionally resonant work. We first fell in love with her storytelling in 2024’s Historical Hotties, a burlesque-inspired journey through centuries of influential women. In 2025, she earned both the Patron’s Pick and Daring Theater Award for Escape From Planet Earth, a funny yet poignant exploration of modern social issues.
In this year’s production, Melanie is getting personal…
Far Too Heavy
An honest and heartfelt examination of trauma and the ways it shapes our everyday lives, Far Too Heavy is a one-woman dramatic comedy drawn from Melanie’s own experiences. Across the hour-long performance, she shares stories ranging from small, everyday “micro-traumas” to devastating and life-altering loss. Through it all, Melanie reminds audiences that no matter the size or shape of our pain, we were never meant to carry it alone.
One of the show’s most striking visual elements is a stage filled with labeled boxes – physical representations of the emotional weight trauma adds to our lives. The imagery reinforces the production’s central message in a powerful and memorable way.
Freaky Thoughts: Far Too Heavy
Far Too Heavy is both an exploration of trauma and a validation of the humanity that connects us all. Melanie effortlessly shifts between gut-punch honesty and genuinely earned laughter without ever losing emotional balance.
Ultimately, the show argues that trauma connects us far more than it divides us. We’re all carrying something. Why not help each other shoulder the weight? Audiences may not leave fully unpacked, but they’ll almost certainly leave feeling a little lighter.
