(North Hollywood, CA) Written and directed by James W. Ruggero, Night of the Black Dahlia delves into the chilling, unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short. An aspiring starlet whose brutal death has haunted Southern California for decades, Short’s story is brought to life through this haunting, visceral stage production.
We were fortunate to be among the first to experience this brand-new original work at the iconic Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group in North Hollywood, and it did not disappoint. Let’s take a closer look at all the dark and gory details.

I’ve had the awesome opportunity to view several of Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre’s past productions including Dark Dark Ride Ride, 80’s Summer Slasher, and even their signature show Urban Death: Tour of Terror. Vastly different in their presentation styles and content, I am consistently impressed with the group’s stunning artistry, unforgettable production styles, and fearless honesty. If you ever have the opportunity to visit this remarkable theatre, I highly recommend it!

More About Night of the Black Dahlia

An original dramatic production, Night of the Black Dahlia recounts the final years and untimely death of Elizabeth Short. Featuring an evocative new score by Hecticatia Guerrera-Carran, the show uses striking visuals, atmospheric staging, and unsettling moments to fully immerse audiences in the horror of this notorious true crime case.
Intended for adult audiences, the production contains grisly imagery, violent themes, and potentially triggering content. As with most of Zombie Joe’s shows, viewer discretion is strongly advised.
Freaky Thoughts: Night of the Black Dahlia

As someone relatively unfamiliar with the details of this infamous case, I found Night of the Black Dahlia both disturbing and captivating. While some elements and characters are, naturally, dramatized for the stage, the production offers a compelling and eerie exploration of Elizabeth Short’s tragic story.
What I enjoyed most about this production, however, was its beautiful staging and visuals. Every scene felt intentionally crafted and thoughtfully blocked to deliver striking moments of storytelling. It left a lasting impression on me.
