(New York, NY) Created and produced by New York-based performer Edu Díaz, A Drag is Born is a nonverbal show depicting one man’s journey to radical self-acceptance. Filled with lively music, comedic moments, tearful scenes, and heartwarming triumphs; we first got to view this award-winning show as part of the 2024 Orlando Fringe Festival. While this year’s beloved Orlando Fringe Festival has already ended, you can still catch A Drag is Born at The Queerly Festival in NYC!
We were so honored to be invited to attend Edu’s very last Orlando performance of A Drag is Born. We loved the show and can’t wait to tell you all about our experience. Thank you, Edu Díaz and Orlando Fringe, for having us out!
Now, let’s discuss the widely recognized, one-person spectacular: A Drag is Born!

A Drag is Born

Hilarious, heartwarming, and absolutely charming; A Drag is Born is an important show about knowing and being yourself. By taking audiences through a vivid tapestry of elated revelations, frustrated setbacks, outside challenges and a hopeful resolution; Edu inspires us all to live an authentic and original existence.
A Drag is Born is entirely nonverbal, relying Edu’s impressive clowning and pantomime skills as well as musical clips, costume changes, audience interaction, and fun choreography to tell the story. The show is visually stunning with effective sound design. But one of the things that makes A Drag is Born so special is Edu’s usage of audience interaction. By intentionally acknowledging and interacting with the audience, Edu brings viewers directly into the tale – making people even more invested in him and his character’s fate.

A Drag is Born, according to Edu’s website:
In a twist of fate, a man is thrust into the spotlight for his drag queen debut. With advanced age, abundant body hair, and limited talents, he is an unlikely candidate. Clown, drag, and magical realism fuel a whimsical quest accompanied by delightful music and colorful outfits as he discovers it’s never too late to embrace your true self.
Freaky Thoughts: A Drag is Born

What an original way to communicate such a valuable message! With Edu’s incredible performance talents, warm personality, and touching script, A Drag is Born successfully takes audiences through the initial highs of self-discovery, the crushing lows of societal rejection, and the final joy of overcoming the opposition and embracing your own identity. I ADORED this show and its pivotal message for audience members of all ages, backgrounds, and personalities: It’s never too late to be yourself!
No matter who you are, I highly recommend A Drag is Born!
