(Orlando, FL) Orlando Fringe is back with a wide variety of ticketed performances, a free outdoor stage, an eclectic visual art gallery, and kids’ activities. While there’s simply too much Fringe to cover in a single article, we are doing a series of posts about this incredible Orlando event. In this third installment for the 2024 season, we’re heading to Transylvania for a scintillating and scripted burlesque show. Do you dare explore Dracula’s Castle in It’s Alive!: A Monster Burlesque Comedy?

Freaks of HHN was delighted to attend the opening night performance of It’s Alive!: A Monster Burlesque Comedy at the Fringe Festival’s Silver venue. What an awesome show for burlesque fans and horror enthusiasts! Thank you, Orlando Fringe and Speakeasy Sirens, for inviting us out!
What is Orlando Fringe?

It’s Alive!: A Monster Burlesque Comedy is playing at Orlando Fringe, a two-week theater festival focused on unjuried and uncensored works of performance art. While similar festivals exist all over the world, Orlando Fringe is the longest running event of its kind within the United States. Fringe Festivals are generally known for featuring alternative or experimental pieces of art, so you really never know what you’re going to find!

About Speakeasy Sirens

Created nearly 10 years ago in an effort to celebrate non-traditional burlesque performers of all physical abilities and body types, Speakeasy Sirens brings a completely different style to the Orlando burlesque scene. Known for their “nerdlesque” and pop culture-focused productions, previous shows have featured themes such as: Shrek, board games, Nintendo, Scooby Doo, and others. You can learn more about the Speakeasy Sirens at speakeasysirens.com or follow them on Facebook and Instagram for their latest updates.
It’s Alive!: A Monster Burlesque Comedy

A 75-minute scripted burlesque show, It’s Alive!: A Monster Burlesque Comedy features fun numbers, comedic moments, and visits from all your favorite classic monsters (including my personal haunted hero – The Phantom of the Opera)! As a scripted show, It’s Alive is more akin to a horror-themed stage play with some rhinestone-covered storytelling moments than a traditional burlesque production. I really enjoyed the overall story and characters found throughout the narrative.
While It’s Alive: A Monster Burlesque Comedy does feature classic monster characters and some horror themes, I think it’s important to note that this is not a particularly dark show. The parody-style humor and friendly dialogue maintain a light and fun vibe to the play’s feel and atmosphere.

It’s Alive!: A Monster Burlesque Comedy, according to the Orlando Fringe website:
Jonathan Harker has been summoned back to Transylvania under mysterious pretenses. His memory of his previous visit is foggy at best, and he’s hoping to find answers. From the Counts brides themselves to the famous opera ghost, a mummy scorned by Hollywood and so many more creatures of the night, this scripted burlesque show is sure to take you on a laugh worthy, campy adventure.
Freaky Thoughts – It’s Alive!: A Monster Burlesque Comedy

As a HUGE fan of both inclusive burlesque productions and anything to do with the classic monsters, It’s Alive!: A Monster Burlesque Comedy is the perfect combination of horror themes, lighthearted humor, and skin-tastic dance numbers. Additionally, I adored the fun storyline and unique spins on these favorite characters.
I really loved this show, and I am already craving another visit to Dracula’s cursed castle! There are still several opportunities to see It’s Alive!: A Monster Burlesque Comedy. Don’t miss it!
