For the past two decades, the annual Play-In-A-Day theatrical event and fundraiser has supported a diverse set of important nonprofit organizations (like PULSE, The Trayvon Martin Foundation, The Inclusivity Project, etc) and local performing arts venues (such as SAK Comedy Club, Orlando Shakes, and Penguin Point Productions). Returning this year in a brand new venue (Fringe ArtSpace), attending Play-In-A-Day is a unique way to support the Orlando arts community.
What is Play-In-A-Day?
Play-In-A-Day is a theatrical fundraising event where teams of local artists and theater-makers work together to create short plays (10 minutes or less). Given the contest’s theme 24 hours before showtime, finished entries must be performed off book with minimal props and costumes for a live audience. While adherence to the year’s theme is required, artists can use a variety of styles and mediums to tell their story. Previous performances included skits, musicals, dances, and even visual artwork.
Like most long running events, Play-In-A-Day has undergone many changes and evolutions as it has grown. However, a few things will always remain true:
-The event has been and will remain a 100% volunteer event serving the Central Florida artistic community and giving artists space to create in a fun unique way.
-Teams work together in a 24- hour format to create 10- minute (or less fully staged works)
–PIAD benefits and serves all voices with intentionality to amplify a mix of voices from a variety of corners of our Central Florida artistic community.
-Someone is ALWAYS in DRAG!
-PIAD is Fabulous & Does Not Suck!
Meet the Teams!
This year’s Play-In-A-Day event features seven teams working to create unique plays and performing art. Teams include a group dedicated to the members and alumni of the BMP Top Teens Program and VOCI Dancers making their PIAD return. VOCI stars Lilly Checchio, Sarah Lockard, and Tymisha Harris will be paired with a poet, poem director, and poem performer. Zelda Grey will return to PIAD this year to create a new song-in-a-day accompanied by original lighting designer Kylee Taylor. And finally, the event’s improv team is back with newcomers Chris Trovador and T. Robbie Pigot.
P. Sparkle (Rob Ward) will again appear as this year’s host. And the Play-In-A-Day competition will be judged by a mix of event veterans and newcomers: Desiree Montes, Marcus Williams, Michael Morman, and Krysti Reif (that’s me!).
