Orlando Fringe is back with a wide variety of ticketed performances, a free outdoor stage, an eclectic visual art gallery, and kids’ activities. While there’s simply too much Fringe to cover in a single article, we are doing a series of posts about this incredible Orlando event. In this second installment for the 2023 season, we’re going to discuss a production full of dry humor, questionable animal facts, 90’s childhood references, and overhead projector skills. Let’s take a closer look at Field Zoology 101!
Orlando Decoded was honored and thrilled to be invited to attend a press preview of this hilarious show. THANK YOU, Orlando Fringe, for having us out!
What is Orlando Fringe?

Field Zoology 101 is playing at Orlando Fringe, a two-week theater festival focused on unjuried and uncensored works of performance art. While similar festivals exist all over the world, Orlando Fringe is the longest running event of its kind within the United States. Fringe Festivals are generally known for featuring alternative or experimental pieces of art, so you really never know what you’re going to find!

Field Zoology 101

Using only an overheard projector, an inventive use of transparencies, and Shawn’s original character Dr. Brad Gooseberry (an eccentric scientist with a no nonsense attitude and arsenal of ecological knowledge); Field Zoology 101 takes us on a hilarious and captivating journey through survival skills, wildlife anecdotes, and all the creature-themed trivia you didn’t know you needed!
As an experienced performer, Shawn is also a skilled improviser able to respond to audience suggestions in real time. He seamlessly weaves this ability into his presentation, creating a ton of opportunities for audience participation and customization to individual performances.
It’s a clean set with a straightforward show concept, yet Shawn has created an incredibly memorable experience for all ages, backgrounds, and preferences. If you have ever seen an animal, you can enjoy Field Zoology 101!
Field Zoology 101 according to the Fringe website:

Freaky Thoughts: Field Zoology 101

As a lifelong animal lover, I ADORED Field Zoology 101! The combination of dry humor, 90’s kid culture (including the use of the overhead projector and transparencies), audience participation, and animal “facts,” created an engaging and truly unforgettable experience! I laughed so hard I literally cried, and I’m already planning a return visit to this awesome show. If you appreciate animals in any way, shape, or form; DO NOT MISS Field Zoology 101!
