Orlando Fringe is back with a wide variety of ticketed performances, a free outdoor stage, an eclectic visual art gallery, and kids’ activities. While there’s simply too much Fringe to cover in a single article, we are doing a series of posts about this incredible Orlando event. In this first installment for the 2023 season, we’re going to discuss a one-woman show starring award-winning comedian Shereen Kassam and directed by Danielle Ziss. Let’s take a look at 1,001 Red Flags!
Orlando Decoded was honored and thrilled to be invited to attend a press preview of this entertaining and engaging show. THANK YOU, Orlando Fringe and FunnyBrownGirl, for having us out!
What is Orlando Fringe?

1,001 Red Flags is playing at Orlando Fringe, a two-week theater festival focused on unjuried and uncensored works of performance art. While similar festivals exist all over the world, Orlando Fringe is the longest running event of its kind within the United States. Fringe Festivals are generally known for featuring alternative or experimental pieces of art, so you really never know what you’re going to find!

1,001 Red Flags

1,001 Red Flags is a one-woman show analyzing the rise and fall of a significant dating relationship. Meeting in the most unconventional of ways – on a 104.1 radio segment – “Mat” and Shereen fall in love quickly, despite plenty of “red flags” showing that this relationship just isn’t meant to work (and let’s be honest, haven’t we all been there before?).
Exploring Shereen’s love of Jordan shoes, hopeful disregard of her boyfriend’s titular warning signs, and sobering experiences of modern day racism; 1,001 Red Flags contains a mixture of amusing anecdotes and heartbreaking moments. Using a variety of symbolic visual cues, audio clips, and personal narrative; we can all relate to this story of hope, love, and self-discovery.
1,001 Red Flags according to the Orlando Fringe website:
A White Jewish firefighter enters a game show on Real Radio 104.1, wins a date with Shereen, a South Asian Muslim comedian, and sweeps her off her feet with his charming red flags.
As a Bring Your Own Venue (BYOV) show, 1,001 Red Flags does NOT take place on the Fringe main campus. Instead you can find this show at the Renaissance Theatre, a large and versatile venue focused on developing new theatrical experiences, near Loch Haven Park.
Freaky Thoughts: 1,001 Red Flags

A comedic yet serious journey through Shereen’s relationship, 1,001 Red Flags was a captivating and entertaining production. Anyone who has ever experienced a failed relationship can relate to the optimistic denial and crushing downfall Shereen describes. But despite the pain, her ultimate tale of acceptance and triumph is an inspiring lesson for those still on the dating scene.
I really loved this show! A fascinating story with several unexpected twists and turns, I highly recommend 1,001 Red Flags! For more content from Shereen Kassam, follow her on Instagram.
