Last weekend, we got to attend a very special fundraiser: “Give Kids The World Presents: Tony Baxter.” Organized to support Give Kids The World’s (GKTW) mission to provide wishes for critically-ill children, this event featured the opportunity to spend time with famed Disney legend – Tony Baxter! An accomplished Imagineer, Mr. Baxter has worked on fan-favorite attractions such as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Indiana Jones Adventure, Star Tours, and the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.
During our session, however, Tony Baxter focused on one of his most iconic and beloved projects – the original Journey Into Imagination! The event was such a memorable experience, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. Thank you, Give Kids The World, for inviting us out!
Give Kids The World Presents: Tony Baxter
Hosted by Jason Surrell from Universal Creative, Tony Baxter first discussed some the blue sky, early concepts for Epcot’s Future World. Describing the original plans for both The Land pavilion and The Living Seas, it was super fascinating to hear the Imagineer’s initial ideas for these classic attractions. But of course, blue sky fantasies are subject to real world limitations (like budgets and sponsorship deals), leading Baxter to discuss the challenges and realities of Epcot’s design and construction.
But the majority of the afternoon’s presentation was focused on the conception and creation of Journey Into Imagination and its popular characters. Mr. Baxter discussed the inception of the Dreamfinder, working with corporate sponsor Kodak, and, of course, the evolution of the adored dragon – Figment! Concluding with a full ride-through video of the the original 1983 attraction, it was so inspiring to hear about the creative process involved in the production of this unforgettable ride.

What a unique opportunity! It’s rare that a theme park fan gets to hear these captivating, behind-the-scenes stories straight from legendary Cast Members and Imagineers. It was a memorable and fascinating experience that I will certainly treasure!
