About Sloppy Joe’s

Founded in 1933 on the island of Key West, Sloppy Joe’s primarily began as a favorite bar for both tourists and locals. Contrary to first impressions, Sloppy Joe’s is not named for the ground beef and Worcestershire sauce filled sandwich. Instead, it’s rumored that famous author and Key West resident Ernest Hemingway used to gently rib bar owner Joe Russell about the unkempt condition of the diner. The idea stuck, and Sloppy Joe’s was born.
