Orlando Fringe is back with a wide variety of ticketed performances, a free outdoor stage, an eclectic visual art gallery, and kids’ activities. While there’s simply too much Fringe to cover in a single article, we are doing a series of posts about this incredible Orlando event. In this seventh installment, we’re going to explore a self-described “standup tragedy.” Let’s take a look at A Scar is Born by Lorelei Zarifian.
We were delighted to be invited to attend a showing of A Scar is Born. Thank you, Lorelei, for having us out!
What is Orlando Fringe?

A Scar is Born is playing at Orlando Fringe, a two-week theater festival focused on unjuried and uncensored works of performance art. While similar festivals exist all over the world, Orlando Fringe is the longest running event of its kind within the United States. Fringe Festivals are generally known for featuring alternative or experimental pieces of art, so you really never know what you’re going to find!
About Lorelei Zarifian

A trained opera singer and French teacher, Lorelei Zarifian is a performer, playwright, and musician. After her run at the Orlando Fringe Festival, you can see A Scar is Born in San Diego’s Balboa Park from June 5-12 and then in San Francisco from September 8-17. Learn more about Lorelei and her current projects by visiting her professional website.
A Scar is Born
Playing in the yellow venue at Orlando Shakes, A Scar is Born recounts the story of one woman’s audition. Telling the casting director about her life and travels from Paris to the United States, the hopeful actor never gives up – even in the face of rejection.

A Scar is Born according to the Orlando Fringe website,
A cycle of 10 songs recounting life in Marseille, Paris, New York and Florida, intertwined with sketches about the absurdity of modern existence.
Including a combination of monologues and music, A Scar is Born highlights important moments in Lorelei’s life from performing in a one-woman show in Paris to learning about a homeowner’s association in Florida. Some moments are humorous and some are more poignant, but they all illustrate important events in the life of a particular artist.
A Quick Note: This show was originally listed as a 60-minute production. It is actually a 30 minute show.

As the show writer and sole performer, it’s obvious that Lorelei has put her heart and soul into the pieces of this production. And as an added bonus – audiences get to hear her professionally trained, operatic voice in a variety of songs throughout the play.
