One of the most memorable meals from my trip to Hawaii was a traditional plate lunch – including rice, macaroni salad, and savory meat. There’s something wholly satisfying about the combination of hearty carbohydrates and nourishing protein. While I don’t generally seek out this type cuisine (when I’m not on vacation anyway), I was pleasantly surprised to come across a Pacific-Island themed food truck on a recent visit to the farmer’s market! Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce Sweet & Salty Island Grindz!

The Sweet and Salty food truck visits multiple Central Florida locations each week. Exact menu items might vary depending on availability of ingredients or other factors. Some of the more unique options include katsu chicken and vegan plate lunch options.

My Experience
I found Sweet and Salty Island Grindz at a farmer’s market in Dr. Philips. While I was tempted to try the vegan plate lunch option, I decided to go more traditional for my first time eating at this food truck. I decided to order their signature Huli Huli Chicken plate with rice and macaroni salad. I waited about ten minutes for my food to cook and then added some furikake (Japanese seasoning made with dried fish and seaweed) to my rice.

Freaky Thoughts
This was such a delicious, indulgent meal! The sauce on the chicken was sweet, and it paired well with the creamy macaroni salad and salty furikake. The portions are generous, and I was more than satisfied by the meal. My only complaint is that I was not given a knife and the plastic fork was pretty flimsy. It was almost impossible to cut my chicken. Otherwise, this was an awesome lunch, and I can’t wait to go back! I think I’ll try the Spam (or vegan pineapple) musubi on my next visit!
