Frightmaze Productions is a macabre, family-run (wow that’s an interesting combination) entertainment company in Merritt Island. They produce multiple haunted attractions each year. In addition to a Halloween attraction they offer a medieval torture maze for the Brevard Renaissance Fair and a Valentine’s Day horror maze. I was recently invited to tour their 2019 Halloween attraction, House of Voodoo.
“Love Bites” Valentine’s Haunt with Frightmaze Productions
Living in Winter Garden (the complete opposite side of Orlando), I had never heard of this haunt and was excited to find out more. For the last four years, Frightmaze Productions has inhabited a space in the Merritt Square Mall. Marked primarily by a banner over the door, it may be a little difficult to find but it’s well worth the search.
While there is one entrance to the attraction, there are actually two paths through the haunted house. Guests can decide if they want to purchase a ticket for both trails or just one. Before you ask- yes, the trails are completely different. Each one has unique themes and characters with a special “extra” fear factor towards the end. Keep in mind, however, that only one of the trails is ADA compatible.
Even though the attraction is called House of Voodoo, there’s no real central theme to either of the trails. The trails both start and end in New Orleans but along the way you’ll travel through a variety of standard horror rooms like zombies and clowns as well as some more unique scenes. For example, one of the trails features the story of Elizabeth Bathory, known for her belief that bathing in the blood of virgins would help to retain her youth and beauty. Visitors to this scene will actually witness one of her “victims” strewn above her bathtub to continuously fill it with new blood.
Each scene is incredibly detailed. Owner Charles Hughes is passionate about authenticity and procures genuine props whenever possible. For example, many of the props in a medical scene actually came from a Florida mental institution. Hughes has also taken a taxidermy class so that he can slowly replace his plastic rat collection with, you guessed it, real live dead rats.
I did not get to see the haunted house in action as I toured it before they opened for the season. However, I was really impressed by the level of detail in the house and the passions of Charles, his wife, and the rest of their team. If you’re in Merritt Island or will be during the month of October, consider checking out this home-grown haunt. Let them know Orlando Decoded sent you!
